LONG
BEFORE THE ADVENT OF WESTERN RELIGION,
people believed in the Dark Angels and Evil. The Dilemma of course is,
if one believes in an omnipotent, omnific and omniscient God, then how
can evil, by definition exist? What is the purpose of Evil and why are
there Dark Angels?
To
Western Minds, the Devil and the other fallen Angels exist on many
different levels for many different reasons. In a way, the Devil is an
important ingredient in religion because if there was no Devil then why
would man need Redemption - why would man need to overcome Evil. Then
again, if there was no Devil, then perhaps there would be no Evil to
overcome. Certainly it is a corundom.
Whether
you know him as Satan, Lucifer, Beelzebub, Salmael, Mephistopholes,
Lusty Dick, The Old Gentleman, Old Nick, Scratch, the Black Bogey or
any of the other thousands incarnations - the Devil is an important
component in most religions and philosophies. Whether you are Jewish,
Christian or Moslem, you have been taught that there is a Devil -
although many humanists and modern day agnostics and atheists dispel
the existence of a Devil, though not necessarily the reality of evil!

Providing
that the Devil exists, and he was once an "Angel," although not just
any Angel, in fact the most loved and most shinning of all Angels, why
would he have "mutinied" so terribly against his creator? Perhaps
understanding the nature of Angels in general might lead to an answer.
Just
why would an Angel rebel? They are not human, and therefore not
immediately vulnerable to the temptations of the "flesh." However, there
is a theory that Angels are very vulnerable to iniquity when they find
themselves associating with humans. Something about human contact seems
to sometimes wear down the righteous armor they wear. But humans are
not to blame for this strange mystical magnetism. Besides, the fall
occured before man - at least before Adam and Eve in the Garden of
Eden.

THE FALL
is full of mystery. In the Hebraic tradition, the Devil was an aspect
of God than communes with humanity. It was a mere shadow of the
brightness of God, which humans would not be able to "bear." As time
went on, this "Shadow" changed into something more - it became a
seperate entity with "Free Will." At first, as witnessed in the "Book
of Job," this Shadow Devil is liken to an Adversary that helps tests
the quality of a Man's Faith. But, the Devil eventually evolved into
being an accuser and subsequently into being a tempter and an Evil
Prince over Evil Spirits, Fallen Angels, and Demons. But then again,
did the mythic figure of Satan evolve or did or perception of the Devil
improve with our own sophistication and understanding?
The
traditions of Western Religion and the theories of its Ancient
"Fathers" is that Angels who fell did so for various reasons, which
might be construed as imperfections. These imperfections are linked
first to their Free Will! For reasons of their own, some Angels chose
to leave the Divine Unity and they turned away from God. The further
away they got from the center of all things (God) the farther they
fell.
Then
there was Lust. Some of the traditions explain that some Angels were
assigned to work with men teaching the arts of civilization when
unexpectedly they began to fall into trouble and engaged in the
seduction of the daughters of Adam. Although it is characterist of some
to blame the women, certainly the Angels in these accounts are not
innocent. The real sin here is not just that the Angels were mating
with woman, but that the Angels were teaching humans very "deep"
secrets that men were not intended to have.
Pride
of course if a most ugly sin and is offered as the primary cause of
Lucifer's Fall. Lucifer - the Son of the Morning or the Morning Star. In the Bible, the Fall is described as follows:
EZEKIEL
28:12 "Son of man, take up a lamentation for the king of Tyre (the
Devil), and say to him, 'Thus says the Lord GOD: "You were the seal of
perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty. 13 You were in Eden,
the garden of God; every precious stone was your covering: The sardius,
topaz, and diamond, beryl, onyx, and jasper, sapphire, turquoise, and
emerald with gold. The workmanship of your timbrels and pipes was
prepared for you on the day you were created. 14 You were the anointed
cherub who covers; I established you; you were on the holy mountain of
God; you walked back and forth in the midst of fiery stones. 15 You
were perfect in your ways from the day you were created, till iniquity
was found in you. 16 By the abundance of your trading [rekullatek] you
became filled with violence within, and you sinned; therefore I cast
you as a profane thing out of the mountain of God; and I destroyed you,
O covering cherub, from the midst of the fiery stones. 17 Your heart
was lifted up because of your beauty; you corrupted your wisdom for the
sake of your splendor . . ."
REVELATION 12:3 And another sign appeared in heaven: behold, a great,
fiery red dragon having seven heads and ten horns, and seven diadems on
his heads. 4 His tail drew a third of the stars of heaven and threw
them to the earth. . .
LUKE 10:17 Then the seventy returned with joy, saying, "Lord, even the
demons are subject to us in Your name." 18 And He said to them, "I saw
Satan fall like lightning from heaven."
Throughout the ages people of all walks of life have written about
their encouters with Evil Spirits. Hell, the realm of the Devil, is
said to be populated by other fallen Angels and entities called Demons,
Devils and Sons of God. It is further related that there is an ongoing
battle between the spirits of darkness and the forces of light.
According to religious thinkers, demons are much more human than Angels
and through free will can bargain, reason and strike up deals with men.
Whereas man can not do this with an Angel. Angels can only do good and
are the manifestations of God's Law, they can not bend the truth and
follow any path they may desire. Nevertheless, demons can only live
through willing humans - their hosts, possessing them and using them
for a short time. Absorbing their energy and light.
Angels,
on the other hand, can only create good (even if it is to wage war on
evil) and bestow love without prejudice upon humankind. They are the
translaters of God's true nature. Finally, in the scheme of things to
come, should there actually one day be an ultimate battle between good
and evil, there will be no neutral ground. All of God's creation will
either fall on one side or the other. Personally, I hope to fall on the
side of the Angels!
