Dance with the Fairies

"None that breatheth living aire does know Where is that happy land of Faery." Spencer, c.1590 a.d.

ORIGIN OF THE FAIRIES:

Long ago before history was recorded on the tiny isles of Britain, there came into being the FAIRIES. No one, not scientist, or Folklorist, has a clue as from where they first came. But here they are, and here they mean to stay! Many people have their opinion about Fairies, but predominately it is the opinions of the people of the 17th century that still prevails. Some think the fairies are spirits of the dead, or fallen angels, others feel they are astral or elemental spirits or beings.

THE DICTIONARY may denote a FAIRY as being an imaginary creature; usually very small and graceful with human form; capable of working good or ill to humans.

IF THE FAIRIES ARE spirits of the dead reborn into a new form, then many believe that they are of a particular class of the dead that mean to the living some harm. Are they the Evil Dead? In Cornwall, the fairies are thought to be the souls of the "heathen" dead, and they are almost always sinister. This beliefe remained until it became somewhat altered. Fairies were believed to be the souls of those who died before Christianity, and were not good enough to go to heaven but not bad enough to go to hell. They lingered on, shrinking until they became as small as insects, eventually disappearing altogether. Sometimes they were thought to manifest as white moths, and other flying insects.

BUT THIS WAS NOT THE MOST COMMON BELIEFE ABOUT FAIRIES, many believe that they were simply a race somewhere between something physical and spiritual. They were of a race of invisible beings who lived within an invisible world of their own. This world somehow overlapped the world of man, and often fairies were thought to be mixing in the human condition for sport and folly.

ARE FAIRIES FALLEN ANGELS? No one knows but some believe that they were cast down from heaven by the Lord for sinful pride. Some were thought to have fallen into the Sea and others onto the Land. Still others, the wicked ones, fell into Hell, where the devil has given them great powers and dominion over men whom they entice with riches and other worldly gains. Those that fell to the Sea and the Land were thought to have had a more gentle and loving soul and therefore they never do harm. Well if they are left on their own they will do no harm! All they wish, is to dance during twilight or in the early hours, mostly in the moonlight, to their sweet fairy music, undisturbed by the mortal world.
